Although this program offering has now ended, the demand for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) continues to grow and CNA training remains one of the fastest, most affordable ways to start a rewarding healthcare career.

How to Find the Best CNA Training Program

Qualifications for CNA Training and Employment

To get started, students must be at least 16 years of age. For those attending in-person sessions, proper attire is also required, including scrubs and masks.

Though not a prerequisite for CNA training, it is highly recommended that you also have a current Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification.

This certification is required by most employers and is taken as a separate class. If you register for the BLS course at the same time as our CNA training, you can take advantage of a discount.

Potential employers may also require the following:

TB screening
Criminal background check
Ability to speak English
Ability to lift at least 35 pounds

To become a TMA in Minnesota, there are a few prerequisites and training requirements needed before taking the final exam and getting certified. 1. Meet TMA Prerequisites

Before signing up for trained medication administration, there are a few prerequisites you need to have first. To enroll and go on your way to becoming a certified medication aide, you must match these TMA requirements:

3. Complete TMA Training

Once enrolled, you’ll be able to attend and finish your virtual and in-person training in under two weeks. HeartCert makes it easy to attend classes with a hybrid learning style. With a couple of in-person labs and the rest accomplished virtually, it’s easier than you think to finish your training.

During the average trained medication aide class, you’ll expect to learn:

Knowledge of how medications work in the body

4. Pass the Certification Exam

The TMA training exam tests knowledge around medication and administration, pharmacology basics, patient rights, just to name a few. The exam consists of multiple choice questions, written portions, and a skills demonstration that covers.

Once you pass the exam, you become a certified trained medication aide. The next step is finding an open position if you’re not already hired somewhere as a CNA. With the new certification, you can unlock more work opportunities, higher pay, and more flexibility with your work schedule.

5. Keep Your Certification Up-to-Date

As with any certification, your TMA license can expire if it’s not kept up to date. Some expire after a couple of years, while others expire after 5 years. However, it’s important to take refresher courses to stay on top of new knowledge and ensure your expertise evolves with the changing industry.

In Minnesota, your certification doesn’t technically expire, but you do need to keep your CNA certification up to date. If it lapses, you may have to take the full course and test over again.

Why Continuing Education Matters for CNAs

Currently, Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) are not required to complete formal continuing education (CE) hours for license renewal; however, to maintain active status, CNAs must meet specific requirements, which vary by state.

For example, in Minnesota CNAs must work at least 8 hours performing nursing or nursing-related duties in a paid position every 24 months to remain active on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. Whereas in Iowa, guidelines state that CNAs must work at least one day every 24 months in a paid nursing role to stay active. In Utah, where requirements are more demanding, 200 hours are required within a 24 month period.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information, CNAs should check with their state’s Nursing Assistant Registry or Department of Health. While CE hours may not be required, CNAs can benefit from additional certifications to expand their skills and career opportunities.

While a career as a CNA is extremely rewarding, it’s also hard to understand what comes with the job if you’ve never experienced it yourself. So, what’s a day in the life of a CNA like? What Is a CNA?

A certified nursing assistant (CNA) is someone who works in healthcare to provide care and assistance to patients in hospitals, clinics, assisted living homes, nursing homes, and other medical facilities. They work alongside nurses as a personal assistant of sorts, to handle the little tasks that would easily become overwhelming for nurses and doctors on their own. Usually, getting your CNA certification and becoming a certified nursing assistant is one of the first jobs that you can take while working your way up in the healthcare field.

While doctors worry about diagnosing and prescribing treatments to patients, nurses manage care plans and administer medications while monitoring health and CNAs provide basic patient care like bathing, feeding, and assisting with daily activities. Arrival: Beginning-of-Shift Tasks

At the beginning of your shift as a CNA, you’re essentially covering the brief of your “mission(s)” for the day. Typically, you’ll receive a report from the previous shift covering each patient’s conditions and needs for the day (or night). This report includes tasks done in the previous shift, what needs to be done in the new shift, it offers an assessment of the patient, and helps give you the information you need to start your day as a CNA.

Support: Companionship and Emotional Stability

As a CNA, you’re working 1:1 with numerous patients during a shift. From helping patients with their daily activities to monitoring their health and simply being a companion to becoming someone they trust. You offer your presence to patients as well as a source of emotional stability throughout the day. Oftentimes, being a CNA means that you’ll be helping people with their most intimate needs throughout the day, and a lot of trust is needed so they feel comfortable. Reporting: Vitals, Records, and Reporting

Multiple times throughout your shift, you’ll be reporting on your patients during each vital check, taking notes, and creating records of what you’ve done throughout the day or at night. These records are essential to the care and well-being of your patients and allow the next CNA to take over responsibilities during their shift without losing crucial information.

Assistance: Daily Activities

After receiving your patient reports, you’ll make your rounds to assess each patient and their needs. You’ll check vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration rate, etc.), take care of hygiene (bathing, brushing hair and teeth, dressing, washing linens, etc.), help patients get out of or into beds and wheelchairs, ensure patients are drinking fluids and get refills, and fill out records as you progress.

Departure: End-of-Shift Tasks

At the end of your shift, daily duties and tasks need to be completed before handing off your patient to the next CNA. From updating final records to pass over to completing end-of-shift duties, you have some extra things to wind down your day. This may include cleaning up your work areas, completing any remaining tasks for your patients, doing a final round of vital checks, or updating your reports. Once everything is done, you hand off your reports and get the CNA taking over for the next shift the rundown on what was done and what’s still needed.

In order to prepare students for their responsibilities as Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), it’s essential to cover a wide range of information.

How Long Does CNA Training Take?

The time it takes to complete a CNA training depends on the course you sign up for. There are several different models and program formats available, and the timeframe in which they take place will vary. Some programs are designed to be completed at your own pace, while others follow a full-time schedule with an intensive timeline for completion. Additionally, there are programs that are spread out over several months to accommodate different learning styles and scheduling needs.

Certified Nursing Assistant training typically consists of a minimum of 75 hours. Of these 75 hours, at least 16 hours consist of supervised practical training, which is conducted with a live person in a lab or a similar setting. This practical training allows CNA students to gain real-life, hands-on experience in a controlled environment, which is essential for preparing them for their role in a healthcare setting.

CNA State Certification Exam

The state competency exam consists of two components: a written examination and a skills evaluation. During training you will be informed and prepared for taking the required examination. How Minnesota’s Next Generation Nursing Assistant Program Impacts Local Businesses

Recent legislation has brought forth the Next Generation Nursing Assistance Program in Minnesota. This program allocates $3 million of tax-payer money to offer CNA training at no cost. The intention behind and intended results of the program are undoubtedly positive and beneficial for our healthcare system; however, there is a flaw that needs to be appropriately addressed. The funds for the no-cost CNA training are being provided to State technical colleges and only tech colleges. This leaves out many private businesses, including highly recognized organizations such as HeartCert.

Tim Smith, Founder of HeartCert, shares his thoughts on the issue at hand,

“This is a great idea but sorely misses the mark as it will create a larger problem by running multiple private companies out of business thus creating further difficulties and exacerbating the problem. Companies like HeartCert who train thousands of students to become a CNA’s will be forced to shut down which will make keeping up with the nursing shortage that much more challenging while also straining the state with higher unemployment. We applaud the ultimate goal but without collaboration within the private sector this does more harm than good.”

HeartCert, along with other private providers of healthcare trainings, have attempted to open communication to be included in the program for over a year. Unfortunately, it has fallen on deaf ears. We hope to raise awareness of this program’s adverse effects and a reconsideration of the current policy that only includes public organizations for funding under the Next Generation Nursing Assistant initiative.

Making a Difference, but Missing the Mark

We applaud the intent of this initiative and realize it was not meant to harm private businesses but rather to accelerate the training and licensure of CNA’s. However, under the current policy where state funds are issued to just one public entity that does not share or distribute them to other businesses, it will have impactful negative long-term consequences to many businesses such as ours.

At HeartCert, we hold hope for reconsideration of the current policy of only including public organizations for funding under the Next Generation Nursing Assistant initiative.

With the continued shortage of essential health care workers throughout Minnesota, we hope this new location will help more people become trained, certified, and employed as certified nursing assistants, or CNAs.

What is a Certified Nursing Assistant?

Certified nursing assistants provide essential care in a variety of settings, including nursing homes, adult care facilities, hospitals and private residences.

CNA job responsibilities vary somewhat depending on the location, but CNAs can generally expect to perform these duties:

Assistance with daily care tasks, such as cleaning and bathing, transportation, preparing and serving food, and transferring between furniture and mobility devices
Measuring and monitoring vital signs
Performing medicare care under the supervision of nursing staff members
Light cleaning and maintenance
Providing companionship and comfort
Other duties as needed
