Top Ten Tips for Choosing Heart-Healthy Snacks

2 years ago by tims Leave a Comment

Maintaining a healthy heart requires a balanced diet and regular exercise. One way to promote heart health is by making healthy snack choices. Snacking is a great way to curb hunger between meals and prevent overeating during meals. However, not all snacks are created equal. Here are our top ten tips for choosing heart-healthy snacks.

photo credit : S’well on Unsplash

1. Choose whole foods

Whole foods are foods that are minimally processed and contain no added sugars or fats. These foods are typically high in nutrients and low in calories. Some examples of whole foods include fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. These foods are great choices for snacking because they are nutrient-dense and can help keep you feeling full and satisfied.

2. Look for snacks high in fiber

Fiber is an important nutrient for heart health. It helps to lower cholesterol levels and regulate blood sugar levels. Snacks that are high in fiber can help you feel full and satisfied for longer periods of time. Some high-fiber snack options include fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain crackers, and nuts.

3. Avoid processed foods

Processed foods are often high in added sugars, unhealthy fats, and sodium. These foods can contribute to weight gain, high blood pressure, and other health problems. Examples of processed foods include chips, cookies, and candy. Instead of choosing these snacks, opt for whole foods or minimally processed snacks.

4. Watch your portion sizes

Even healthy snacks can be high in calories if consumed in large quantities. It’s important to watch your portion sizes when snacking. One serving of nuts is typically a small handful, while one serving of fruit is about the size of a tennis ball. Use measuring cups or a food scale to help you determine the appropriate portion size for your snacks.

Related: Are You Eating Enough Fiber for Heart Health?

5. Choose snacks that are low in sodium

Excess sodium intake can contribute to high blood pressure, which is a risk factor for heart disease. When choosing snacks, look for options that are low in sodium. Some examples of low-sodium snacks include fresh fruits and vegetables, unsalted nuts, and low-sodium crackers.

6. Opt for healthy fats

Not all fats are bad for your heart. Healthy fats, such as those found in nuts and seeds, can actually improve heart health. These fats can help lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease. Other sources of healthy fats include avocado and olive oil.

7. Plan ahead

Planning ahead can help you make healthier snack choices. When you’re hungry and in a rush, it can be easy to reach for unhealthy snack options. Plan your snacks ahead of time and keep them on hand so you always have a healthy option available.

8. Read those labels

As food companies work to provide healthier snacks, consumers need to look beyond terms like “healthy” or “natural” on the label. That “healthy” nutrition bar might have more calories than a candy bar. Also check for added sugars and high levels of sodium.

9. Watch the beverages

Drinks count as you keep track of between-meal calories. Many people are aware of the calories in soda but might overlook what’s in juice or their coffee drink. Consider options such as plain or sparkling water, unsweetened tea or coffee, or a small glass of 100% fruit juice.

10. Beware the break room

A 2019 study in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics indicated that people commonly consumed food provided by vending machines, company cafeterias and friendly employers or colleagues – and that added an average of 1,300 calories to workers’ weekly totals. So if you work outside the home, consider taking your own healthy snacks with you.

Choosing heart-healthy snacks is an important part of maintaining a healthy heart. By choosing whole foods, high-fiber snacks, and healthy fats, you can promote heart health and reduce your risk of heart disease. Remember to watch your portion sizes and avoid processed foods as much as possible. With a little planning and preparation, you can make snacking a healthy part of your diet.

American Heart Association Issues New CPR Guidelines

5 years ago by bwadmin Leave a Comment

In the new CPR guidelines recently issued by the American Heart Association, the importance of bystander CPR was re-emphasized. “Cardiac arrest is a life-or-death situation,” the AHA committee chair said. “When every second counts, it’s important for lay people to be ready and willing to start CPR.”

The new guidelines recommend that bystanders CPR even if they aren’t sure whether the victim is in cardiac arrest. The risk of harm from CPR is low – especially when compared to the potential risk of cardiac arrest.

New CPR Guidelines Focus on Recovery

CPR guidelines

In a change, the new CPR guidelines add recovery to the “chain of survival.” The chain of survival is a series of actions that determine how and to what extent a patient will recover from cardiac arrest. Those actions include calling 911, performing CPR, and using an automated external defibrillator (AED).

The new recovery phase includes treatment, surveillance and rehabilitation, which includes monitoring and treating depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress caused by the cardiac arrest and heart disease treatment.

Expanding Bystander CPR

The new guidelines also included efforts to encourage bystander CPR. The AHA suggests leveraging mobile phone technology to alert bystanders of a nearby cardiac event. In addition, there is a need for bystander training tailored to specific racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic populations that traditionally have lower rates of bystander CPR.

AHA Updates Instructor Certification Card Extensions

5 years ago by bwadmin Leave a Comment

As we reach the six-month mark of the COVID-19 pandemic, the American Heart Association (AHA) has issued new information on its CPR training provider and instructor certification cards.

certification

Initially, the deadline for instructor card renewals was extended by 60 days in areas with widespread COVID-19 spread. (We go into those details more extensively on an earlier blog post.) Now, the AHA is giving cardholders a 120-day extension. The due dates are based on the “renew by” dates listed on existing certification cards.

Exception For Areas Still Under Distancing Restrictions

There is one exception. Cardholders and training centers with cards expiring at the end of July may have until the end of October 2020 to renew their certification, if they are in areas that are still under lockdowns and restrictions.

Normal Renewal Timelines Apply

For those with cards that expired at the end of last month and going forward, the AHA states that renewals must take place by the recommended renewal dates.

Follow Local Instructions and Use Discretion

The AHA offers some flexibility, reminding training centers to follow local mandates and recommendations, and to use their discretion in ensuring the safest environment for CPR students.

If you are running out of time to renew your AHA instructor card, HeartCert is here to help. We’re offering CPR instructor courses at our Twin Cities location, and are taking every necessary precaution to keep our students safe. Contact us with any questions.

Learn CPR Without Leaving Home

5 years ago by bwadmin Leave a Comment

Although stay-home orders are slowly being relaxed in Minnesota, many people remain reluctant to leave home for anything non-essential. The good news is that many businesses have adapted to this new normal, offering curbside pickup, online ordering, telehealth appointments and more.

In order to continue providing CPR training to medical professionals, essential workers and laypeople who wish to become CPR certified, HeartCert CPR is now offering virtual CPR classes that can be fully completed at home.

In our virtual CPR courses, students watch interactive training videos and complete written tests online, from home. We send a CPR manikin and supplies in the mail. Then, we schedule a virtual skill session with one of our instructors.

Watch this short video for instructions on how to assemble your manikin at home.

Once you’ve completed all portions of the virtual training, you’ll receive a two-year American Red Cross certification card. (If you need an American Heart Association certification, please contact us.)

We are also still holding in-person CPR training courses. We have taken all necessary safety measures, including disinfecting and social distancing. Take a look at our course schedule.

As we all know, healthcare workers are providing an essential service during the COVID-19 crisis. In addition, many organizations are seeking additional healthcare staff, with CPR certification required for employment. HeartCert remains ready and able to provide CPR education and instruction for all essential workers.

Continue reading for an overview of our virtual CPR course options, as well as the precautions we’re taking to keep our students and instructors safe.

Precautionary Measures

For our in-person CPR courses, we’ve limited class enrollment to nine people. All students will be placed at least six feet apart, with no sharing of manikins or supplies. We’ve also implemented extra sanitation measures. We are asking students to stay home if they are ill, have been exposed, or have recently traveled.

Blended Learning

HeartCert CPR offers online/in-person blended learning options. In these courses, participants watch and complete interactive training videos and written tests. Then, come in for a short in-person skills course (following all precautionary measures listed above) to become certified.

Provisional Certification

After completing the online portion of a blended learning course, receive a provisional certificate that will be valid for 90 days. Within that 90-day period, simply attend a one-hour skill session, and the certificate will be converted to an official two-year CPR certification.

Distance Learning – Coming Soon!

In these virtual CPR courses, participants will be sent a manikin and equipment. After completing the online training and testing, an instructor will virtually test your skills via videoconferencing. Watch our Facebook page for more information on these new CPR certification course options!

The Easiest Way to Prevent Heart Disease: Physical Activity

6 years ago by bwadmin Leave a Comment

What do you think of when you hear the term “physical activity?” Do you think of hours at the gym, on the treadmill or lifting weights? Do you think of running long distances, doing exercise videos, or trudging through workouts you hate?

physical activity

If so, you may need to refresh your views on physical activity. Because it doesn’t have to be an unpleasant, time-consuming chore – it can be as simple as working in your garden, walking around the block or having a dance party in your kitchen. And the benefits to your health – both physical and mental – are worth finding an activity you enjoy.

Register For a CPR Class Today

According to medical professionals, physical activity is key to heart health, specifically. Moving your body on a regular basis improves the strength of the heart muscle, the health of the arteries, and lowers blood pressure and cholesterol. Physical activity moves oxygen throughout the body more efficiently, and helps your brain perform better. It releases feel-good endorphins that boost mental health and well-being.

Not sure how to get started? Keep it simple. Take the stairs at work, or walk to the store instead of driving. Rake leaves or shovel snow. Walk or, yes, run. Do whatever appeals to you, because that will keep you committed.

The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, or 75 minutes at a more vigorous intensity. That can be broken up into 20 or even 10 minutes chunks, and should ideally be combined with strength and flexibility exercises.

When it comes to physical activity and heart health, every little bit counts!

If someone in your family or workplace suffers cardiac arrest, are you prepared? Sign up for a HeartCert CPR class today.

How Does Irregular Sleep Affect Heart Health?

6 years ago by bwadmin Leave a Comment

A new study has found that people with irregular sleep patterns are at a higher risk of heart disease and cardiovascular events such as stroke, coronary heart disease and congestive heart failure. Irregular sleep patterns are defined as night-to-night differences in duration of sleep, as well as the times at which a person went to bed and woke up. Because many of us likely experience these irregularities, it’s important to understand the risk and take action.

sleep

In the study, researchers used monitoring devices to track the sleep of nearly 2,000 people for seven days each, then followed each participant for about four years. None of the participants had heart disease at the start of the study. But during that time, 95 people experienced heart disease, heart failure or stroke, sometimes fatal.

Researchers found that people for whom time spent sleeping varied by more than two hours from night to night were 2.2 times more likely to suffer from some form of heart disease in the succeeding years. Those who had a varying bedtime of 90 minutes or more had double the heart disease risk.

So how can we improve our sleep? Doctors advise minimizing the use of mobile devices before bed. This is because the blue light from screens can interfere with sleep quality and regularity. Track your sleep using a wearable device or simply a journal to understand and improve your schedule.

6 years ago by bwadmin Leave a Comment

HeartCert CPR is excited to announce the grand opening of our new headquarters in Eagan! This new location will serve as our home base, providing a centralized location for our CPR courses and permitting us to offer new classes, such as our new training for Emergency Medical Responders.

Minutes from downtown Minneapolis, the Mall of America and MSP International Airport, and an easy drive from most Twin Cities suburbs, Eagan was a logical choice for our home base. The office is spacious and well-appointed, offering a welcoming and comfortable space to learn CPR, First Aid and more.
